The Perfect Dovetail Jig
Mi amigo Austin posted about dovetails, and he's right — a perfect joint is a thing of beauty. But how do you get there? With a jig. Not some fancy CNC machine, but a simple, hand-built tool that makes every cut exact.
For twenty years in the shop, I've learned that the best tools are the ones you make yourself. This jig? It's the secret to a dovetail that fits like a glove. No glue, no filler — just wood and skill.
Why This Jig Works
Most jigs are just templates. This one? It's a machine. The angles are locked in, the guide is smooth, and the clamp holds tight. When you push the chisel through, every cut is the same. That's the difference between a good joint and a great one.
Measurements & Materials
- 2x4 pine (for the base)
- Hardwood scraps (for the guide)
- Clamps (2-3)
- Chisel (1/4" and 1/2")
- Saw (hand saw or jigsaw)
- Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
Step-by-Step Build
Take a 2x4 and cut it to 12 inches long. Sand it smooth. This is your foundation.
Cut a piece of hardwood to 6 inches long. Use a protractor to mark 15-degree angles on both ends. This is the key — the angle has to be perfect.
Glue the guide to the base. Use clamps to hold it tight while the glue dries. Let it sit for 24 hours.
Cut a piece of wood using the jig. If the joint fits tight, you did it right. If not, adjust the angle and try again.
